Beaches, Lakes and Waterfalls
El Salvador's climate is pleasant throughout the year; on avarage 71F degrees. El Salvador has 320 kilometer of Pacific coastline which offers many beautiful beaches for sun lovers. Its warm beaches are ideal for enjoying water ski, surfing, boating, scuba diving, fishing or swimming. Lakes and waterfalls are also another option for outdoor activities on a nice sunny day.

Make sure that you bring hammocks, food, and water. Always ask someone for directions, sometimes the signs are small and you may miss them.

Costa del Sol

Beaches

The beaches are El Salvador's best! The mixture of light and dark golden sand, palm trees, and warm water tempature make any beach in El Salvador a tropical paradise. The coast is only 30 minutes away from San Salvador. Some of the most popular beaches in El Salvador include: Costa del Sol, El Sunzal, El Cuco, Los Cobanos, La Libertad Coast, to name a few. La Libertad is a perfect spot for surfing or you can try one of the beaches along La Costa del Balsamo located about 46 miles off San Salvador. La Costa del Sol is one of the most exclusive beaches in El Salvador, known not only for its natural beauty but also for its beautiful hotels and restaurants. To complement your day go for a boat ride to the Jaltepeque estuary or to one of the islands in the Fonseca Golf where you can encounter dolphins and sea turtles. Los Cobanos beach is famous for its peculiar coral reefs, which reproduce in shallow warm waters and are actually very rare on the Pacific side of the American Continent.

Lakes
Some of the most popular lakes in El Salvador are Lake Güija and Coatepeque Lake. The beautiful Lake Güija lies near the town of Metapan. This lake borders part of Guatemala and part of El Salvador. The Salvadorean part is dotted with beautiful volcanic cones. The lake has many islands some of which were home to precolumbian people. Here archaeologist have found museum pieces that were buried during volcanic eruptions.Coatepeque Lake Coatepeque Lake is about an hour drive from San Salvador. This lake was once the crater of an ancient active volcano. Its deep blue water, steep surrounding mountains and volcanoes create breathtaking views. The lake has an island where hot springs flow into its cool waters, making this the perfect spot for swimming. If you are more adventurous, try diving into the deep water of the lake where the impressive lava formations are a reminder that this was once the heart of a volcano. Coatepeque Lake is an excellent place for swimming, boating, or water skiing. Soutwest of Coatepeque lake stands the Santa Ana Volcano, Cerro Verde, and Izalco Volcano. Izalco Lake is located 16 kilometer from San Salvador. This lake is the largest in El Salvador. Its beautiful green waters and dramatic cliffs are spectacular. You won't be dissappointed with the views!

Valley of the Dead

view larger imageThere are many waterfalls, lagoons, cascades scattered throuthout the country. Some of the prettiest waterfalls are the ones located at the Valle de los Muertos (Valley of the Dead) near Perquín and the one near the town of Juayúa. The waterfalls at Juayúa are the highest in the country, some of the falls are secluded so be prepared for a hike to find them. The views are worth the climb!. At El Valle de los Muertos the tourist can enjoy a day swimming at the waterfall ponds or jumping into the water from one of the cliffs. The water is a little cold but very clean.
