El Salvador is full of creative and talented people. El Salvador's colorful art and crafts include works of clay, wood, leather, pottery and objects made of natural plant products such as henequen (broad leaves) and mimbre (wicker). Collectively, these items are known as artesanias. Artesanias make perfect souvenirs for family and friends. It is less expenssive to buy artesanias in a town known as Ilobasco and don't forget--in El Salvador you can always bargain! |
![]() Artesanias are original art and crafts made by local artesans in El Salvador. These can include colorful ceramics, objects made of wood, leather, or objects made of henequen such as hammocks or tule and mimbre such as baskets and furniture. The most popular towns known for their beautiful creation of artesanias are Ilobasco and San Sebastian. The town of Ilobasco is located about an hour away from San Salvador. Most of the town is full of small bussiness showing colorful displays of ceramics and wood objects.
San Sebastian is famous for its weaving objects made of natural fibers. This is one of the few places in which the old method for weaving is still in use. Weavers make their creations by using a machine operated by a foot pedal and one or more pairs of sticks to weave the material around. |
