El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. The country is about the size of the state of Massachussets. El Salvador's size and shape has earned it the affectionnate nickname "El Pulgarcito" or "The Little Thumb" of Central America. Because of its size El Salvador can be easily explored. El Salvador's capital, San Salvador, is the most popular destination for tourists. The city is about 350 years old. Salvadorean people are a generally warm and they are accustomed to tousists, however be aware that there are some dangeorous neighborhoods.

San Salvador is the capital and most important city of El Salvador. San Salvador lies in a valley at the foot of The Quezaltepeque Volcano. It is conveniently located in the center part of the country close enough to the airport and within a day's travel from anywhere in the country. For the tourist is it better to set up base at San Salvador and travel from there to other areas of the country. This city offers excellent hotels, restaurants and plenty of alternatives for entertainment. In San Salvador one can find any type of restaurant you can imagine. Nightlife in San Salvador concentrates mainly at La Zona Rosa which is one of the most exclusive areas in the city. At La Zona Rosa the visitor can enjoy late-night entertainment at one of the many clubs, discotecs or restaurants featuring live music. Wether you prefer a nice romantic dinner or a more adventureous night at a rock-n-roll disco, San Salvador has it all! For an interesting Sunday, visit one of the museums or galleries which feature work by local artists. For other types of activities on the wekeends there are usually soccer games being played at one of the various stadiums.
