Hiking in El Salvador
El Salvador's landscape contains many volcanoes, mountains, and high valleys. For a perfect hiking experience I suggest San Salvador's Quezaltepeque Volcano or the Izalco Volcano or if you prefer, follow a trail down into the crater itself. The views are unbeatable!

Make sure to bring plenty of water and good hiking boots.

Izalco volcano El Salvador's multiple volcanoes, mountains and high valleys provide plenty of opportunities for hiking while enjoying breathtaking views. Some of the best places to hike include: Izalco volcano,Santa Ana volcano, Chaparrastique volcano, Puerta del Diablo, Cerro Verde, to name a few. National parkCerro Verde (The Green Mountain)offers various hiking paths leading off in all directions while enjoying a variety of wildlife, exotic plants and one of the most impressive views of the Izalco volcano. The 2000-meter ascent to the top of cerro verde mountain reveals the beautiful panorama of Lago of Coatepeque, Izalco Volcano, and the Santa Ana volcano. One can climb either volcano in a reasonable daytime hike.

If you are one of those who prefers to drive, there is a road that leads all the way to the top. The parking lot and Hotel de la Montana sit just on top of the mountain. From the hotel's balcony one can enjoy the still steaming Izalco volcano and feel almost close enough to touch it. For many years this volcano was known among sailors as the "Ligthouse of the Pacific" for its continuos eruptions that occurred every 15 to 20 minutes.

Santa Ana's Volcano Santa Ana volcano also known as Llamatepec, or "Father Hill" is the largest volcanoes in El Salvador. At the top of this volcano are four small craters sitting on a larger crater and a green lagoon of sulfuric water. Both Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes are considered active, but they have not erupted since 1966. A three to four-hour hike from Cerro Verde leads you to the top of The Santa Ana Volcano.
